Historical Assessment of the Ecological Condition and Channel Dynamics of the Lower Mokelumne River: 1910-2001

The study was undertaken in conjunction with the preparation of the Lower Mokelumne River Watershed Stewardship Plan. The study provides a detailed understanding of past riparian functions between channel dynamics, floodplain disturbance, and vegetation and will assist watershed managers in attaining management goals in the areas of watershed condition, wildlife habitat, and aquatic ecology. With this knowledge, managers will be able to develop clear restoration objectives, prioritize restoration activities and assess the success of restoration efforts.

Completed in May, 2002, the study and its associated aerials and photos are currently being modified for posting on this site. In the interim, copies may be obtained from the San Joaquin County Resource Conservation District. Topics included in the study report include:

Historical Background of the Lower Mokelumne Watershed   Geologic Development of the Mokelumne Floodplain
  River Floodplains and Channels
The Hydrology and Hydraulics of the Mokelumne River

Materials and Methods:
  Rectification of Historical Maps
  Rectification of Historical Aerial Photos
  Land Use Archive
  Floodplain Delineation
  Hydrograph Analysis
  Sinuosity Calculations
  Vegetation Mapping

Results
  Hydrology of the Mokelumne River
  Floodplain and Channel Dynamics
  Ecological Condition and Vegetation Dynamics

This assessment was prepared with the assistance of the Humboldt State University Foundation for the San Joaquin County Resource Conservation District.
